mundus vult decipi, ergo decipiatur
the world wants to be deceived so let it be deceived
How about — The world wants to be deceived, therefore it is deceived. I don’t think “we” should “let it.”
I concur – though after stumbling across it (don’t remember where) I found a smidge of info on Wikipedia where it was attributed to a Roman satirist Petronius. There was also this gem alluding it’s possible origin. “The pontifex maximus Scævola thought it expedient that the people should be deceived in religion; and the learned Varro said plainly, that there are many truths, which it is useless for the vulgar to know; and many falsities which it is fit the people should not suppose are falsities.”
Sigh… politics & religion, fun, fun.
Haha. Any chance that you’ve read The Brothers Karamazov?
I don’t think so. I remember reading something Dostoevsky but not sure what. I have a foggy memory at times.
